Topic: Pioneer RMX-500 and the likes

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I really like this device, but it's a bit pricey. I was wondering if you guys could give me suggestions for similar devices for effects and also to add samples (claps, snares, hi-hats, etc). I also love the kind of toys Dubfire and Hawtin use in their live shows, where it's constantly playing a bar and you just add any pattern you want with your samples.

Thanks!

My other question would be: since I mix mostly using headphones only (for cueing and master), how would I connect the RMX-500 to make it work with my Mixtrack Pro 2 and VDJ?

I use a ZOMO MC 1000 as an effect controller. Its technically just a regular midi controller like your Mixtrack just without Jog wheels, and faders. But you can map all of the knobs and buttons to the effects in VDJ or to a VST. You could also map snares, kicks etc. to some of the buttons using the sampler in VDJ. You'll be able to prelisten to the effects on a track to a certain extent, but I don't think you could do it at all anyway with an RMX connected to a Mixtrack. Also its 4 channel controller so you can have effects on one track but not the other, with a RMX I belive it plays on the master channel. I paid around $120us for mine about 5 yrs ago

Also most of the effects on the RMX500 are already in VDJ. Hope this helps

Thanks for the feedback!

My only problem with the Mixtrack Pro is that I use more than just 3 or 4 effects in a single set. It's not that I overdo it, but I like a little bit of everything when the time is right, and having the switch/browse effects is a pain. Would be much easier if I could simply twist a knob around and choose whatever I wanted in a second.

if you've got the dials they can be mapped specifically to an effect, and although you can't see them, vdj has more than 3 effect slots, I think it's 7 [yet to test this I only use 4]
switch fx via the drop down is slow I agree, I mapped 32 buttons on my lauchpad 2, 8 call fx that don't need a slot, and then 8*3 call a fx to a slot 1 - 3 [slot 4 is always the volume fx for me] I only use 16 or so fx I have a few duplicated on differing slots so I can have more flexibility.

BTW

That's the exact reason why I bought the ZOMO and that's exactly what it does. If i want to turn on a echo I press a button, slip break I press the paddle switch, balance I turn a knob. No drop down menus used. You can map it to any effect or option in VDJ.
