I've installed a few audio effect extensions, but am finding stability issues and strange audio effects. Is there anything i can do on my system to improve it? e.g. effects stay on after I turn off. Sounds goes to mono and stays mono for while after turning off effect.

Be more precise about the effects involved
(I have some ideas but may be totally wrong)
There can be many causes:
- Plugin was designed like that - strange ones, latency before to stop
- API change with old not updated effects (incompatibility) - most do not stop anymore or crash at start, some rare ones were creating multiple instances (may not exist anymore)
- Bug in plugin
some plugins are more or less known having some strange working mode
remember most are third party created and may be for a specific usage, not always matching general one
if they are not accurate simply forgot about them ;)
by the way you can rightclick the plugin in list and check "ignore"
