Just saw this post from a year ago - interesting discussion because one of my gigs has an 80's based format.
When doing a retro format - we all cringe a little but people usually take the good with the bad.
There is this misconception toward a retro night where it only brings in the old cronies - we'll, I guess that depends on the programming.
My first 80's gig was all new wave - talking heads, a flock of seagulls, devo, altered images...and outside of their biggest hits, only the older crowd knew what I was playing.
Then I shifted gears a little bit and a set like this brought in a bunch of kids - mostly girls.
This is a sample of a gig I did a couple months ago- the dance floor was madness.

This night was HUGE - tons of girls all under 30 totally getting into this 80's mix.
I beatmixed by way through most of it.
Other places in the world have different taste in 80's music - mexico is much different - crowds down there are into weird shit like Noel and Bananarama
Say what you will about these songs but at least around here in Seattle, this set is gold.

DO NOT PLAY the following songs from the previous posts:
OMD - Enola Gay
Kim Wilde - Kids in America
Camouflage - The Great Commandment
Alphaville - Big In Joan
Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok
Sabrina - Boys
Sandra - In The Heat Of The Night
Phil Collins - Something Happened on the Way to Heaven
Ceejay - Finally
Clubhouse - Deep In My Heart
Erasure - Love To Hate You
Cartouche - Feel The Groove
Linear - Sending All My Love
Sonia - Never Stop Me From Loving You
OMD - Pandora's Box
Adventures Of Stevie V - Dirty Cash
Rock Master Scott - The Roof Is On Fire
Noel - Silent Morning
Bananarama - Love In The First Degree
Pet Shop Boys - What Have I Done To Deserve This
Spagna - Call Me
Kylie Minogue - I Should Be So Lucky
Donna Summer - This Time I Know It's For Real
Dimples D - Sucker DJ
Dino - That's The Way I Like It
Leila K - Got To Get
Alphaville - Big In Japan
Breakfast Club - Never Be The Same
Go West - We Close Our Eyes
Rick Astley - My Arms Keep Missing You
All of these songs are either too depressing, melancholy, obscure, or forgotten in the sands of time (Cartouche - Feel The Groove?? Alphaville - Big In Japan? Spagna - Call Me????? Really? Come on, nobody knows these songs). Even some of the songs I left off the "do not play" list are iffy but these ones are the definite do not play unless you want an empty dance floor. If you're doing an 80's themed party you have to go with the MOST popular songs. Even though a lot of the following songs are cheesy, keep in mind that people associate the 80's with cheese and FUN music, not depressing "art school new wave". Keep in mind that it's not going to be ALL 45 year old people there, there's likely to be younger and older people there so you need to play the most fun and recognizable music that people will actually want to dance to and sing along to.
What's wrong with this suggestion? Its just your opinion, it doesn't mean its right or wrong. I find Murry Head useful, people know the song, maybe because its Los Angeles or something. As for some of the rest, obscure to a point, but only because they were never hits here. But many of these songs were Top 40-100 songs in the States and do quite well.
I like shocking people with how DEEP I can go and they appreciate it, they don't get upset and go WTF. If they go WTF, its in a good way.
Your last sentence is interesting and most likely why I will limit how many "Birthday Parties" I do because FRANKLY suburban peeps have "strange" taste anyway and the kids always bug you about some current jam they are playing on the radio totally throwing off the vibe if I played such a song.
He said "Art School New Wave", that's funny...

They did???? So which era was better? I happen to think the current era of music is nothing to write home about.

djfourmoney..
the 80's was voted the best decade for music....most of the tunes metioned are pure pop tastic cheese, but if you dig deeper into the 80's you will find a vast ammount of unbelievable ammounts of music..HOUSE music was born in the decade and the use of synthesizers, so how the HELL can you even put 'DJ' infront of your name if you actually know bugger all about music?!?! the art of Dj'ing is knowing your history making older tunes sound like they were produced today and not sticking to one genre. why would you stick to just one when there is so much amzing music out there.....funk founded the basis of disco, disco founded house, house progressed into techo/jungle/drum and bass and dare i say the swear word trance....now we are left with some amazing music, nu disco, house and dub step is at an all time high just now so how can you say the music today is nothing to write home about ?? what a daft comment unless you base your music taste on the charts.
anyway....
bonaparte & SevanKambel are the winners in this thread by a country mile
some amazing songs there some of which are credible enough to drop into a modern house set today....sylvester - do you wana funk is in my top ten all time fav tunes.
here are some other crackers that i have no seen in the lists....unless i missed them, ok some of these i wouldnt personally have on my ipod but if i was doing an 80's party you can not avoid them.
indeep - last night a DJ saved my life
Eddie Grant - Electric Avenue / warped
Gary Numan - Cars
Beats International - Jam Hot
David Bowie Lets Dance
Kraftwerk - The model
Adam & the Ants - Prince Charmin
New Order - Blue Monday

Elton John -I'm Still Standing
